Catholics veil their churches at Passiontide in imitation of our blessed Lord. He often veiled (hid) Himself from His enemies. The veiling is a stark somber reminder that we move from the desert to persecution. Yet Christ only remain veiled from His enemies until the appointed time. So too, His Mystical Body, the Church, is at times protected from her enemies. At other times, it is necessary for her to fight, to undergo a Passion, and to die so as to rise.
