Our Lord came to restore what was lost and even add on to it by beautifying it, or divinizing it in someway. He started this restoration as soon as He came. We can think of them in terms of the first three Joyful Mysteries: (1) With the Annunciation, He restored the place of virginity. (2) With the Visitation, He restored our place as adopted sons of God. (3) With the Nativity, He restored marriage, making it able to become the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Christ ended divorce at the highest level, Now, with the Holy Family, all families can do the same.

Lent is the Church’s way of encouraging us to engage anew in mortal combat with the fallen man inside each one of us. The Scriptures provide deep lessons for those with ears to hear; consider the images of sparrows, wood, scarlet, hyssop and living waters.
