The Holy Name of Jesus, which means ‘God Saves,’ represents infinite love and infinite power. It is the shortest and most powerful prayer to fight against temptation. If you persevere in praying it fervently, you shall be victorious, without fail, over the enemies of your soul’s salvation. Some prayers to use include: The Litany of the Holy Name, the Psalter of Jesus, the Hail Mary, and various short aspiratory prayers.
What most calls man to conversion is the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ; specifically, how it manifests His infinite love (and the horror of sin). Christ’s Passion will produce a change of life in us. The problem is we do not take the time to truly contemplate His blessed Wounds. We must contemplate His Passion attentively, and for a due space of time, not hurriedly. He will grant the grace needed for a complete transformation of life, but you have to make the effort.
Jesus goes into the desert for 40 days. We follow His example in order to break the hold that the world has on us. We will be tempted, especially by our flesh. We must shut this down right away and not attempt to dialogue with the temptation. We must also not tempt God by trying to force His help with imprudent penances. Without the grace of God, man can do nothing towards his salvation. Yet grace is not given, in God’s ordinary providence, except to those who pray for it. Thus prayer is necessary for salvation. God’s grace is absolutely necessary to perform any good work towards obtaining eternal life. The ordinary means for obtaining this grace is prayer. In general, God only gives His grace to those who ask for it and are disposed to receive it. Through the prayers selected for Lent, the Church is teaching us how to pray and prayer's great value.
