St. Charles Borromeo approved of a miraculous statue of Mary shedding tears of blood, commemorated by a shrine in Milan to this day. There have been other similar miracles, and she also wept in her apparition at Akita. The tears of our Sorrowful Mother were present at Calvary. Though she experiences perfect happiness in Heaven in the beatific vision, the Holy Virgin mystically weeps on account of the Church militant here below. She weeps because the Church is persecuted. She sheds tears because many of God’s Children are unfaithful and many abandon the Catholic Church, which is the one and only way of salvation. Mary cries because many priests and bishops betray the Church as Judas betrayed Jesus.
