Only one thing is necessary: the salvation of our soul. Lent, more than any other liturgical season, is the time when the Church focuses our attention most upon the battle for our soul. The ashes are meant as a sign of our interior weeping and mourning over our sins. They also emphasize that only one thing is necessary, since all else will end in ashes, especially the body. The three gospels and epistles from the Sundays in the Septuagesima season aid us in this battle. They are meant to (1) convince us of the all-importance of this battle; (2) teach us that the world, the flesh and the devil are our spiritual enemies are; and (3) we save our soul by prayer, mortification, and the love of God. Iesu, fili David, miserére mei.
