Joy and Sorrow

“Rejoice always!” commands St. Paul. He wrote this in times not unlike ours: secular government persecuted the Church, paganism was rampant, and the pope even needed public correction. Joy and sadness both stem from love. Sadness is the human response to the privation of some good and joy is the response when some good is possessed. They are subjective, depending on what one loves and how. A true joy comes from an objective good. It is only when one makes God the center of one’s life that one can rightly moderate his love for created things. Then one rejoices in God always and feels sorrow regarding created goods for God’s sake. It is by penance (separating ourselves from created goods) and by prayer (contemplating God’s goodness, perfections, and love for us) that we grow in our love of God and in true joy.
