Prayer like Good Soil and Leaven

The habit of daily and faithful prayer establishes the kingdom of heaven in man’s heart. It prepares us to receive the sacraments well and is necessary for growth in the spiritual life. It is absolutely essential for salvation. The one who thinks he doesn’t have time to pray is poor and deluded for saving his soul is one’s most important task. Our Lord teaches us much about prayer through parables. Just as the mustard seed needs good soil to grow, so too before we pray, we must clear aside the rubble and weeds which crop up in our soul. This creates a space for God to enter, and soon the rubble is greatly reduced or gone all together. We also can’t expect instant or amazing results every time we pray. God’s action works like leaven. In a hidden way, it slowly permeates and lightens the whole. Don’t forget, it is particularly necessary for us to remain faithful to daily prayer during the very busy holiday season.
